Boatbuilding & restoration

Amore

Originally used as a ferry in the Scottish Isles, Amore was re-purposed as a pleasure craft. She had significant problems with rot at the fore of the boat, splits in the planking and a selection of fungi growing in the locker.

After cutting away the offending material and carefully cleaning all traces of the fungi and rot: the planks and beamshelves had new pieces of larch scarfed in, the gunwhales, sprayrails, deckbeams and stem were repaired/remade in oak and the locker was re-fabricated with adequate ventilation from marine ply. The splits were then repaired with thin splines of larch whilst making sure they don’t spread any further.

All of the solid wood used was locally sourced Scottish timber - ensuring the boats provenance.

Tomales Bay One-Design build

Built at the Boatbuilding Academy, Lyme Regis, and owned by Gareth Lewis. "Jessie" is a Paul Gartside design that was altered to suit being cold-moulded in three layers of khaya, as opposed to the original double skin of cedar. Bright finished, she has a khaya backbone with yellow cedar deck, iroko sole boards and sitka spruce spars.

Spar & oar making

Need a new paddle for your canoe? Maybe a competition-ready spoon oar for your gig? or a handmade, wooden spar?
